The Eidanger fjord and exciting nature reserves

Kattoya

Porsgrunn is part of the densely populated area that begins in the north with Skien and stretches down to Stathelle in the south. You can find the start of the urban area from the city center southwards to Eidanger, and on the western side of the Eidanger Fjord.

Eidanger and the Eidanger fjord

Eidanger is a built-up area in Porsgrunn municipality, home to landmarks like the Eidanger Church, which was built in the 12th century. A visit to the church reveals a medieval painting of the Ascension of Christ, and nearby you’ll also find ancient burial mounds.

The Eidanger Fjord extends six kilometers between Brevik and Sandøya, stretching into Eidanger all the way to Nystrand. There are several swimming spots here, including Brønnstadbukta and Røra. Grenland Folk High School, which once housed the local sheriff’s and magistrate’s estate from the 1700s, also carries the historic legacy of the area. As part of preserving Porsgrunn’s heritage, the city is dedicated to maintaining its nature and biological diversity in the best possible way.

The important nature reserves

For those interested in experiencing wildlife, the area around the Eidanger Fjord offers several nature reserves. The purpose of a nature reserve is to protect and preserve an area of particular importance for biodiversity. This is the strictest form of area protection and includes endangered, rare, or vulnerable nature.

In a nature reserve, it is prohibited to do anything that might damage the area, to ensure that it is protected from activities that could harm the ecosystem and its biodiversity. We encourage everyone to follow the rules when visiting a nature reserve, such as the Holtsåsen Nature Reserve.

Explore historic Porsgrunn

If you’re more inclined to explore the historical side of Porsgrunn, you can visit the east side of the city, where you’ll find the town hall and square. Here, you will also discover well-preserved small wooden houses and can visit Vestre Porsgrunn Church, built in 1758.

You’ll also find several listed buildings in this part of town, such as the Seylmager House, Lars Christian Hem’s House, and the Old Custom House, providing a glimpse into Porsgrunn’s past. Take a trip up the Water Tower for a panoramic view of the entire city.
